The Trevor Davies Memorial Lecture is an annual event hosted by the Trevor Davies ALP Branch, and the Newtown ALP State Electorate Council. This year, it was held at the Royal Hotel on June 13. Assistant Minister Tim Ayres, a former branch member and Darlington local, was asked to deliver the address.

At just 20 years old, Shaquille Robinson may have been the youngest in her class when she graduated with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment at Eora College Darlington, Sydney TAFE, but she is a multi-award winner.

At the official launch of the Darlington village upgrade, Charles Kernan Reserve was filled with a crowd of locals and a palpable sense of anticipation. DARLINGTON: Between September 15-19, Sydney’s Eora College will proudly celebrate its 30th Anniversary Open Week. Eora College has been servicing local and statewide Aboriginal communities since July 6, 1984, from both its Redfern, and more recently, purpose-built Darlington campus. Sydney University is seeking approval for a 68 per-cent increase to its Camperdown-Darlington campus floor space by the end of 2020. This will accommodate a 21 per-cent increase in students on the campus as well as 4,000 units of “affordable” student accommodation.

DARLINGTON: Residents have expressed their opposition to the proposed University of Sydney student accommodation to be built on Abercrombie Street. The accommodation, part of the University’s Abercrombie Precinct Development, will provide studio apartment rooms for 200 students.

Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) oversaw the installation of an Automatic Dispensing Machine (ADM) in front of the Redfern Health Centre in February 2013. DARLINGTON: City of Sydney spokesperson Joel Johnson has thanked community members for feedback regarding the barbecue and basketball hoop at Charles Kernan Reserve. In response to the feedback received the City will be retaining the barbecue in its current location.

If Col James had a passion, it was undoubtedly housing – not just the creation of a building but adding to the lives of so many, often vulnerable people who longed for a home. He used his architectural skills to engage with all sorts of groups of people – students, Aboriginal communities and the homeless. Gentle soul that he was, he was still a very determined fighter.

DARLINGTON: On Sunday November 25, Charlie’s Garden in Charles Kernan Reserve (corner of Abercrombie and Shepherd streets) celebrated the grand opening of their new shed with sculptural features made by Wrought Artworks, the heritage blacksmiths at the Australian Technology Park. Lord Mayor Clover Moore, long-time supporter of the garden, was special guest for a high tea hosted by performer Ru Bella.

The application for new buildings at North Eveleigh will not include the whole of site Transport Management and Accessibility Plan (TMAP) required by the Concept Plan Consent. Instead, the SMDA proposal will only address the impact of its current small development on the area’s transport and traffic.

DARLINGTON: In welcoming people to a passport ceremony at The Settlement Neighbourhood Centre, Ray Jackson, President of the Indigenous Social Justice Association, said: “This day is about Aboriginal people showing respect to people who in return respect us as the sovereign owners of this land.”

In 2010 the Sydney University Vice Chancellor met with Darlington residents and promised the University would be a better neighbour. The promised follow-up meeting never eventuated and many in the local community did not believe that the University that ate Darlington would change. This view has been strengthened in dealings over the Abercrombie Street developments.
