UN Day in Support of Victims of Torture

The  (June 26), led by the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Survivors (IRCT), is part of a global movement to combat torture in all its forms.

Hosted by STARTTS with the IRCT, a panel discussion was held at Sydney Town Hall on June 26, 2018. “Dangerous Times: Perspectives on Torture, Shifting Global Politics and Respect for Human Rights” was moderated by Walkley award-winning journalist Richard Ackland. Speakers included STARTTS CEO and IRCT President Jorge Aroche with Sekai Holland, Michael Kirby and Rabia Siddique.

The panel shared insights in the context of a shift to the right in global politics. They also discussed increased attacks on human rights activists, journalists and human rights workers, and explored the right to rehabilitation and how torture can be stopped.
