Volunteers’ News – August 2024

Winter is nearly over, unofficially ending in Australia on August 31 this year. Let’s celebrate lower power bills and warmer days. The Spring Solstice (or Equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere is on September 22.

Happy 90th Birthday, Eleanor
Best wishes for a wonderful birthday to our long-time volunteer and supporter Eleanor Boustead. Eleanor, you are an inspiration – still delivering 350 copies of the South Sydney Herald in your local area each month. Thank you!

Paris Olympics – July 26-August 11
The Games of the XXXIII Olympiad in Paris will be underway as the SSH goes to press. The theme: “Games wide open” (Ouvrons Grand les Jeux). Even if you aren’t sports minded, it’s hard not to get involved in some way. Nations of the world have been getting together in various conurbations since Athens in 1896. This Olympics will host 329 events in 32 sports, and athletes from 206 nations. Wishing our Australian teams every success; and spare a small thought for our first Gold Medallist, Edwin Flack in 1896.

Indigenous Science Experience – Redfern Community Centre, Saturday August 17 from 10am-3pm
This is free event and will get you hands-on with a diverse range of interactive science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for all ages. Bush foods, traditional medicine and 60,000 years of stargazing will feature. This is a free event, but bookings are encouraged.

Save the Date! SSH Fundraiser on Sunday October 27 – SSH Harbour Cruise aboard the Tribal Warrior’s Mari Nawi, 3.30-7.30pm. Cost $75/50.
Culture, music, sunset and BBQ on Clark Island, thanks to our friends at Tribal Warrior, and sponsors Club Redfern and Woolworths Redfern. I first went on a Tribal Warrior Cruise 30 years ago for a friend’s 50th birthday on the Deerubbin (if my memory serves me correctly). It was magical and the crew were brilliant. Shane Phillips and his crew on Tribal Warrior will make sure the trip is wonderful. Book now!
