On Sunday May 25, ahead of National Sorry Day, a powerful moment of reflection and recognition unfolded at the Uniting Church in Ashfield. Iconic Aboriginal artist Jeffrey Samuels stood in front of his striking mural, joined by MP Linda Burney and the Rev. Bill Crews, in a gathering that symbolised healing, memory, and the enduring strength of First Nations voices.
Jeffrey Samuels, an iconic artist and one of the founding member of the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative, has spent decades using visual art to assert and celebrate his Aboriginal identity. His mural in Ashfield is a vibrant expression of resilience, culture and truth-telling – an especially poignant backdrop for this year’s Sorry Day, which honours the Stolen Generations and reminds the nation of its historical and ongoing responsibilities.
