Claudia Hastings, who now calls Maroubra home, has had one dream role since she was 10 – to play Victoria the ‘white cat’ in CATS. And at 25 her dream has just come true, as she was cast in the 40th anniversary revival!
On TikTok, she almost exploded with excitement on receiving the news. “It’s my dream role as it’s an iconic role for a performer. I grew up as a ballerina and it has this beautiful ballet solo I have always loved.”
Claudia was born in Brisbane but left for the US as a baby and returned at 16 where she studied formally with the Queensland National Ballet. She realised, however, that singing and acting classes were also needed to help her become a triple threat. “As a performer, I would say I’m a good dancer, a natural actor and have a soft alto singing voice,” she laughs.
“My first dancing contract was at 18 with Opera Australia in Aida, the whole process taught me so much. David Livermore is a wonderful director. I even got to tour The Phantom of the Opera to Oman and perform for the Crown Prince.
But the life of a musical theatre performer takes hard work and discipline. “I think the hardest thing is at the start of rehearsals there is so much content to learn, but at the end, when you see the outcome, it’s all worth it.”
Although well-travelled, Claudia has settled into Maroubra. “It’s like a little escape, away from the main tourist beaches. People are lovely. It’s a little pocket of peace and quiet,” she smiles. Living in Maroubra also plays a big part in helping her switch off after an arduous rehearsal. “Oh, I love the water. I walk along the beach, take the walk from Maroubra to Malabar, read a book, grab a coffee. I just love being in nature.”
This revival production of CATS is apparently staying true to the original from 1984. “I think CATS deserves this revival because it’s a timeless piece really, has a good structure and has always been super popular. The cast is incredible, and I think very true to character.”
With Claudia’s dream role now secured, she has started to work on her new dream role. “Next up I feel I would like to create something from scratch, be the first to play it. Maybe with a company like Cirque du Soleil or work with a writer/producer to originate a role.”
To originate a role, you need to be on Broadway or the West End. And with Claudia’s talent, that’s exactly where this white cat may be heading.
