Lawson Street footpath plans on hold

REDFERN: Our November issue included a letter from local resident Dr Rebecca Saunderson expressing concern about lack of consultation with respect to the City’s plan to remove the trees along the footpath on Lawson Street.

On November 20, City Projects and Property announced a hold on these plans in response to Transport for NSW’s redevelopment of Redfern station southern concourse, which will divert much pedestrian traffic from Lawson Street to Little Eveleigh Street.

The City is “reviewing the works in an effort to minimise impact and retain existing trees in the area”.

Meanwhile, the rest of the project, which connects the cycleways on Wells Street to the Little Eveleigh Street cycleways, will go ahead this month and is expected to be complete mid-2020.

The cycleway will be constructed on the northern side of Lawson Square and across the Lawson Street bridge in front of the “40,000 years” mural.
