Invaluable contribution of volunteers

The Redfern & Waterloo Volunteer Awards, presented by the Redfern & Waterloo Neighbourhood Advisory Board Events Group, will be held at the Erskineville Bowling Club on May 24, from 11am to 1.30pm. The event is always such a positive reminder of creative and generous activity – and of what we love most about living together. It’s truly uplifting to witness the diversity of cultural programs, leaders and participants.

Thanks to Laura Kelly, Community Development Worker with Counterpoint Community Services, for co-ordinating the awards, which were initiated 11 years ago by Mike Shreenan, Executive Officer of Counterpoint (formerly known as The Factory Community Centre).

Our community newspaper relies on up to 80 volunteers each month. Contributors (including writers, photographers, illustrators, artists and editors) and distributors (drivers, door-to-door couriers, hosts in many inner-city cafes, pubs, community centres and libraries) give hours of their time, expertise and care to ensure that local news is shared – delivered both in print and online to an estimated 30,000 readers.

We couldn’t do it without them. We wouldn’t exist without them.

On Sunday May 7 we invite all our wonderful volunteers and their families (including beloved dogs) to join us for a picnic lunch (from 12.30pm) at Charles Kernan Reserve in Darlington. The park is located at the corner of Abercrombie and Shepherd Streets, just near to the memorial bench which honours our founding editor, the late Trevor Davies.

Catering will be provided by Barn Doors Cafe in Redfern, and there will be fun games and races for all ages, with prizes donated by the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Omafiets Dutch Bicycles and Hum on King. Please bring a blanket. If in any doubt concerning wet or overcast weather please phone 0431 488 890.
