‘Fred’

‘Right!’ said Fred
and what could go wrong
as he shouldered his tools
and climbed rung by rung

he stepped onto the roof
made of very old tin
and one of his legs
sank down to his shin

he yanked and his boot
came out with a bound
and no ladder was needed
to get Fred to the ground
