Chippendale cellist, Heesoo Kim, has taken out the top prize against four young talented instrumentalists for the 2022 Sydney Eisteddfod NSW Doctors Orchestra Instrumental Scholarship.
On Wednesday August 3, at the Zenith Theatre, Chatswood, five finalists performed a concert program of major works on their chosen instrument of clarinet, cello, violin or harp.
Heesoo Kim, accompanied by pianist Alexander Yau, captivated the audience with her performance of György Ligeti: “Sonata for Solo Cello”, ii. Capriccio, Cesar Franck: “Sonata in A major (for Cello & Piano)” transcribed by Jules Delsart, iii. “Recitativo-Fantasia. (Ben moderato – Molto Lento)”, and Gaspar Cassadó: “Danse du Diable Vert” – Dance of the Green Devil.
Ms Kim was awarded a scholarship of $8,000, consisting of a $6,000 scholarship and a $2,000 cash prize sponsored by the NSW Doctors Orchestra – Musicus Medicus.
The second scholarship was awarded to Anna Chung, clarinettist from Cherrybrook. Ms Chung received a $2,500 scholarship and a $500 cash prize, sponsored by The Brian Shearman Memorial Trust Fund, established by his family and friends.
The remaining finalists, Tina Ma from Penshurst, David Carreon from Connells Point, and Ava Pudney from Cremorne, received $500 each, sponsored by the NSW Doctors Orchestra – Musicus Medicus.
Adjudicators Caron Chan, James Fortune and Barry Warmsley said they were impressed by the high calibre of performances in this year’s Instrumental Scholarship.
Sydney Eisteddfod also encourages instrumentalists to enter the 2023 Sydney Eisteddfod NSW Doctors Orchestra Instrumental Scholarship.
