Campaign for Aboriginal affordable housing

During my time as Waterloo Aboriginal Liaison Officer with Inner Sydney Voice, I have been consulting with local Aboriginal community organisations and Aboriginal housing tenants regarding concerns they may have with the Waterloo redevelopment plans.

I have also participated in a number of community events. One action in particular I have fully supported is the campaign for affordable Aboriginal housing. It has been taken up by the major Aboriginal controlled organisations in Redfern and Waterloo, with the support of other local organisations. They have issued a serious call to action for the state government to designate at least 5 per cent Aboriginal affordable housing on all “government controlled” land that is targeted to be developed or redeveloped.

Once again this very urgent matter brings to the attention of all concerned, including members of the Aboriginal community who choose to remain in Redfern and Waterloo, the importance of Aboriginal historical and cultural significance in the area.

I have enjoyed my role at ISV immensely, engaging where ever possible with the local community. I am very disappointed, however, that funding for this position may cease at the end of the year. Hopefully, funding will come through and this important work can continue.
