A night of sonic brilliance: Hiromi opens the Women’s Jazz Festival

SIMA’s 2025 Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival Opening Night will feature fearless musical innovator and Grammy Award-winning Japanese composer and pianist Hiromi, hailed as “one of jazz piano’s most brazenly virtuosic players”.

Famed for her technical mastery and her ability to reimagine genre and form, Hiromi erases the lines between jazz and classical, composition and improvisation – taking audiences on an uncharted sonic journey.

Throughout her illustrious career, Hiromi has released 12 acclaimed albums, collaborated with jazz legends such as Chick Corea and Anthony Jackson, contributed to bassist Stanley Clarke’s Grammy-winning Jazz in the Garden, and performed at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics.

She is a perennial favourite on DownBeat’s Annual Critics and Readers Polls, and has performed at many of the world’s finest jazz festivals, including Montreux, Umbria, North Sea, Newport and Monterey.

At City Recital Hall on October 23, Hiromi will join forces with multi-Grammy-nominated string quartet PUBLIQuartet to present The Piano Quintet, a blend of jazz and classical composition.

Hiromi has said, “Whenever I play shows or make an album, I feel like it’s a journey to find the people who can feel a deep connection to what I’m doing.”

The Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival, running from October 24 to November 3, will involve over 60 global and local artists across seven venues. Among those performing will be stunning American vocalist Jazzmeia Horn; explosive instrumental quartet Kira Kira featuring Satoko Fujii; and local legend Sandy Evans, featured in Shakti Spirit, a new Indian jazz collaboration celebrating female creativity.

Hiromi tickets are available here.
