‘in Redfern Park the ibis gather’

in Redfern Park the ibis gather
after several days of drenching rain
that washes clean their city feathers
and makes them feel that once again
the land and they belong together

they had to leave  we stole their terrain
and old water ways gone forever
young ladies walk in high disdain
in Redfern Park

in far-off lagoons and flooded plain
the ibis found a life they could sustain
but long mournful years of arid weather
sent them back to ancient shelter
to live claw to beak from bin and drain
in Redfern Park
