Podcast review – ‘Dare to Lead’ by Brene Brown

Brene Brown came into the public eye through her TED Talk “The Power of Vulnerability” in 2011. This hilarious and brave TED Talk was followed by other speaking arrangements, TED Talks, several books, and a weekly podcast.

Brene’s newest venture is the podcast Dare to Lead, which challenges everyday people to lead with open hearts, vulnerability and to be “awkward, brave, and kind”. Brene talks with guests about how to live a productive, useful life and how to achieve excellence at the same time as achieving happiness.

One of her maxims is that people who are truly happy and truly kind have great boundaries and a creative outlet. As an academic who studies wholeheartedness and shame and teaches post-grads at Houston University, she tells the story of how alarming it was for her to discover that really wholehearted, happy people all did things such as putting creative work out there, telling stories about personal problems and their therapy.

This podcast is a great, free resource, if you want to boost your motivation or look for excellence in your life in whatever sphere that may be. It could be attending the free art or poetry groups at Redfern run by South Sydney Uniting Church, or attending victims counselling paid for by the NSW Government. It could be as simple as an excellently cooked meal or a wonderfully balanced budget. It could be going for a walk and admiring a leaf or looking up at the sky with wonder.

Whatever your area of excellence is today, this podcast is a great resource to support it, and I hope you stay awkward, brave, and kind.
