Excellence awards for Pemulwuy

This article is sponsored by the Aboriginal Housing Company’s Pemulwuy Project. Authorised by Michael Mundine, CEO, Aboriginal Housing Company Limited

Since the Community Social Plan developed back in 2000 by Angie Pitts for the Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) redevelopment of The Block won the International 2004 Crime Prevention Through Environment Design Innovation Award, the Pemulwuy Project has continued to win awards for its innovations in providing a financially self-sustainable way to provide Aboriginal affordable housing.

Pemulwuy was most recently recognised at the Urban Taskforce Development Excellence Awards on Wednesday November 10, in the Urban Renewal Development category, as it nears completion with only the final office, retail building and childcare centre still to be completed.

While some locals were apprehensive about the height of the 596-bed Col James Student Accommodation building designed by Turner Studios, now that it is built, neighbours, particularly those to its west living in Lawson and Caroline streets, enjoy much less noise from trains on the busy approach from Central into Redfern station and those closest to Eveleigh Street no longer have windows rattle and their 1880s terrace houses shake when trains pass.

The AHC also wishes to acknowledge the contributions of Amanda Fleming who has been with us for nearly 11 years and in the role of Media and Communications Manager for the past three. During the construction she has kept everyone up to date with AHC and Pemulwuy Project progress and is leaving to pursue another career. Amanda will be missed and the AHC team wishes her the very best.
