Nadia Reid & Her Band
The Lansdowne, Broadway
July 14, 2019
Nadia Reid is great. A commanding performer of beautifully crafted songs, Reid is a gifted vocalist – smooth, seemingly effortless. Her guitar style is also wonderful. I was impressed and moved.
Performing material from her first album, Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs, as well as 2017’s impeccable Preservation, the acclaimed New Zealand singer-songwriter was backed by her regular band: Sam Taylor (electric guitar), Richie Pickard (bass), Joe McCallum (drums and percussion), and Anita Clarke (violin and keyboards).
There were lovely textures, subtle dynamics, and very occasional references to cricket.
It was a delight to sit upstairs at the Lansdowne (having enjoyed a delicious potato pizza downstairs), and the sound quality was bright and clear. Supports Motte (Anita Clarke with electric violin and looper) and blues-folk singer-songwriter Ainsley Farrell completed the bill.
