Kinder-gardeners inspired by nature

Planet Ark established National Tree Day on the last Sunday in July back in 1996 and for the last 22 years the last Friday in July has been Schools Tree Day. This year’s theme is “Be Inspired: It’s in Our Nature”.

The children at Sunbeam marked the day by planting native berries and rocket plants.

After some enthusiastic digging in the food garden to prepare holes for the bushes, the children peered into the top tray of the worm farm to see if they could spy any. Director Yuki Moyle explained that families take weekly turns to bring in fruit skins and vegetable scraps for the worms.

The children fetched their watering cans and held them under the tap on the worm farm as Ms Moyle shared out the “worm wee”. The cans were then topped up with water so the strong fertiliser wouldn’t burn the newly planted seedlings or the kangaroo paw plants flowering in another part of the playground.
