Testing the options

The NSW government has released three options for the redevelopment of the Waterloo estate.

The online options are single-page representations of how the buildings, uses and heights of the development might be arranged. The options will be tested with the community and other key stakeholders from September to October 2018. The next phase of the engagement will see a series of workshops around key studies by consultants involved in the process.

Those who have been campaigning to keep Matavai and Turanga will be pleased to see that Option 1 retains the buildings. There may be an increase in anxiety, however, for people who live in the parts of the estate marked for early staging in 1-6 years.

The 15th Assembly of the Uniting Church (held July 8-14) has resolved to allow its ministers “the freedom to conduct or refuse to conduct same-gender marriages”. The Assembly has agreed to hold two equal and distinct views on marriage to honour the diversity of Christian belief among its members.

The Assembly has affirmed that the First Peoples of Australia, the Aboriginal and Islander Peoples, are sovereign peoples in Australia. “Members of the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress spoke from the floor of Assembly to affirm the proposal as a way to move forward in the covenant the Uniting Church has with them.”

Salt and light – local journalism in the Age of AI

Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas asks how human dignity can be safeguarded in an age shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), digital platforms and concentrated technological power. AI can serve human beings and the common good, but only when governed by ethical responsibility. It must not reduce people to...

A shivered plate

I can juggle three balls (badly), provided there’s a wall to bounce them off back towards me. I can keep a hacky sack in the air for around 30 taps. I can do ‘toe basketball’ and get the ball in the basket (on the floor) with my toes, at...
