Pop-up Christmas music to gladden South Sydney

Sydney will sparkle and buzz this Christmas, with pop-up musical performances in local neighbourhoods, light displays, decorations, roving performers and more Christmas trees than ever.

“While life is a little different this year, we’re still creating a festive atmosphere in the city centre and across our inner Sydney villages,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“Join us in celebrating [a Covid-safe] Christmas in the city – be it downtown or in your local neighbourhood – with festive lighting displays, decorations and roving performers bringing Christmas cheer to all.”

The City of Sydney Council is providing Christmas trees in 11 locations, including the much-loved Christmas tree in Martin Place and a tree in Glebe for the first time.

Musical performances will pop up at lunchtime and early evening from 4 to 24 December in different village locations each day including:

– Redfern Street, Redfern
– Fitzroy Gardens, Kings Cross
– Taylor Square, Darlinghurst
– Crown Street, Surry Hills
– Union Square, Pyrmont
– King Street, Newtown
– Erskineville Road, Erskineville
– and Green Square Amphitheatre, Green Square.

Live performers, including musicians and stilt walkers, will move through the city centre entertaining local workers and Christmas shoppers until Christmas Eve.

The City has also developed a self-guided walking tour of Christmas lights, trees and shopping destinations across the local area. The walk is free and designed for the whole family. Download the walk at sydneyculturewalksapp.com

The Sydney Christmas charity partner this year is OzHarvest. The City will be encouraging those who can afford to do so to make a donation to its important work at feedsydney.com

“After a year that has been tough for so many, it is great to be able to come together and enjoy the holiday season,” OzHarvest NSW State Manager, Richard Watson, said.

“We are so grateful to be collaborating with the City of Sydney to make sure we get good food to those who need it most across Sydney, especially at this time of year.”

One Another

One Another contains two parallel and interrelated stories – one about Joseph Conrad, his life and writing, and the other about Helen, Tasmanian student of literature in Cambridge, who is writing a thesis about him.

The Substance

As a man in his 50s featuring all the normals for someone of my age – middle-age spread, tinnitus and going grey and bald to name a few – but still fit, physical, clever and switched-on to name even more, my attraction to The Substance was admittedly driven in large part by my attraction to 61-year-old Demi Moore.

Ten Years to Home

A production made possible by the collaboration of the Nautanki Theatre and KXT Bakehouse, Sonal Moore’s autobiographical and tender-hearted Ten Years to Home tells the story of the South Asian diaspora through the eyes of three generations. The play, while looking with clear eyes at the difficulties of immigrant families, also celebrates the contribution made by Indian traditions and beliefs to a culturally diverse Australia.

A building to sing about

BONDI BEACH: Does a building have a voice? This question is the kernel of Building Song, an experimental art activation by 15 artists poised to begin its third iteration at Bondi Pavilion this month.

‘I just want to learn this trick!’ – an interview with Johannes Geppert (#1)

Johannes (Johnny) Geppert is a Surry Hills-based artist. His studio-gallery on Crown Street, Collage Atelier, is open for exhibitions as well as weekly workshops in drawing, painting and collage.

Combining modern love with classical sounds and jazz

If your Pinterest boards are trending cosy Nancy Meyers interiors, a visit to Shakespeare and Company is on your Paris bucket list, and the rule in your house is lamps only (ceiling lights are for emergencies), then you need no introduction to jazz-pop artist Laufey (pronounced lay-vay).
