Advent: A time to remember we need hope in our lives

On December 1 we celebrated Kathleen Weaver’s life at South Sydney Uniting Church. A rich Advent experience for the large group gathered … because of Kathleen. Many people shared about their relationship with her. Her creativity, courage and passion for living were all held within the context of the difficulties she faced in relating with us.

Her love of beauty and beautiful things she held fiercely as she struggled with mental and emotional difficulties. Very few people in the church that day had any real connection with one another. Kathleen did not bring her friends together in life. In death she gathered us into a real experience of community, sharing the precious gift she had given us – another step into the mystery of love in our lives.

This Advent we wait again for the newness the birth of a baby brings to our world. And treasuring the vulnerability that enables transformation. We have the opportunity to renew ourselves. To rekindle our desire to unite with the whole community of life – linking the work of our hands and the dreams of our hearts to create a more peaceful and just world.

HAL hath no fury like an AI scorned

When 2001: A Space Odyssey's onboard system HAL 9000 decides to off the crew of the Discovery One spacecraft, in order to stop itself being disconnected, it is awfully polite about it. Declining a request to open an airlock, it gives the famous line, "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid...
