Happy pets, happy parks – simple tips for local owners

Many of us enjoy taking our dogs out in South Sydney’s parks and streets. But pet owners should know the basic rules to avoid fines and keep everyone safe.

Leash laws
In NSW, dogs must be on a leash in public places unless you are in a designated off-leash area. Local councils, such as the City of Sydney, provide signposted off-leash parks (over 30 locations). Even off-leash, you must always keep your dog under control.

Cleaning up
Owners must immediately pick up after their dogs. Not doing so can result in an on-the-spot fine. Carrying bags when walking your pet is a must.

Dangerous or menacing dogs
Certain breeds, such as pit bull terriers, or dogs declared dangerous by a council, face stricter controls. These dogs must wear a muzzle, be on a leash, and be handled only by an adult.

Other animals
Cats are allowed to roam in NSW, but councils encourage owners to keep cats indoors at night for safety and to protect wildlife.

Penalties
Fines for breaches are issued under the Companion Animals Act 1998 (NSW) and can range from $275 for failing to pick up waste, $330 for dogs not on leash in public areas, to higher penalties for not controlling a declared dangerous dog.

For details of off-leash parks, check your local council’s website.

A little care goes a long way to keeping our parks welcoming to pets and people alike.
