‘It’s brutal out here’ – waiting for Olivia Rodrigo

Best friends Phoebe and Michaela can’t wait to see their idol when she makes good on a promise to tour Australia later this year.

All we want is to see Miss Olivia Rodrigo in concert!

The inspiring singer-songwriter became hugely successful with her debut single “Drivers License” (2021) attracting plaudits and three well-deserved Grammys.

Olivia’s works never fail to captivate audiences of all demographics, with flawless and youthful artistry and performances.

The thing that continues to set her apart from the crowd is how relatable her teenage perspective is – her lyrics perfectly capture the ups, downs, ins and outs of youthful relationships, both platonic and romantic.

Last year we were ecstatic to find out she would be travelling to our home country in September of 2023. We were then gutted to hear the news that due to “unforeseen circumstances” our opportunity to live out the “teenage dream” was postponed for over a year!

Nevertheless, we have been streaming her new album Guts (2023) on repeat, soaking up the emotional experiences so beautifully articulated through her songs.

Step forward to April. We called each other screaming that our dream first concert had been made possible once again. Asking permission, finding a chauffeur, and scraping together the money, we set up our six devices, irrespective of the fact we were meant to be in fifth period, and ventured off to secure tickets in Olivia’s Live Nation Presale.

Sadly though, our journey was cut short after hours of watching the page refresh second after second. The presale tickets were exhausted but there was still hope. With not a sliver of doubt we’d secure them day two, we logged onto Ticketek for the General Sale. Two days, two best friends, and five dead devices later, how was it “logical” we had missed out? “The grudge” we held against Ticketek was now unimaginable, but sulking was “a bad idea, right?”

That day, our hearts were crushed purely by luck not being on our side, but I guess that’s just the “ballad of a [rural town] girl”. We are still crossing each other’s fingers that two tickets may arise and provide us the opportunity to experience our first concert with our favourite “so American” artist.
