ART

Local St Peters’ artist Geoff Harvey (known as the Dog Man for his striking entries in Sculpture by the Sea over decades) feature in two exhibitions devoted to our canine friends. Harvey’s drawn portraits are on show with paintings, sculptures and ceramics by other artists in Year of the Dog, at the Robin Gibson Gallery until March 7. His dog silhouette sculptures welcome visitors upstairs in Dogged at the new Lismore Regional Gallery until April 1.

FICTION

Little Fictions wrangled an impressive array of canine-inspired Australian stories to a packed audience at Knox Street Bar, Chippendale, on February 20. Host Kathryn Yuen (Mrs Chan from the SBS TV comedy, Maximum Choppage) kept the fictional fighting dogs, flying dogs, keep-fit dogs, lesbian dogs, gay dogs, and more on a tight leash while actors, Sam Wang, Lauren Hamilton-Neill and Felix Johnson grabbed their throats for a great night of storytelling.

MUSIC

Mac DeMarco played tunes from his 2017 album This Old Dog at Enmore Theatre on February 5. His croon-fest showcased singles “One More Love Song”, “On The Level”, “My Old Man” and “This Old Dog”.

THEATRE

The Little Dog Laughed, at The New Theatre in Newtown until March 4, is a tale of sexual ambiguity and double standards by Douglas Carter Beane. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is coming to the Sydney Theatre Company in July, and you can read Catherine Skipper’s great review of Belvoir’s Barbara and the Camp Dogs from our February issue online.

FAIR DAY

Doggy agility demos, free micro-chipping, Chinese folk dancing, and plenty of stalls with doggy treats featured at the Super Furry Year of the Dog Fair Day in Joynton Park, in Zetland on February 24.

FILMS

Wes Anderson’s new stop-motion animation film Isle of Dogs is due for release in Australia in April. Set in a dystopian future in Japan, a young boy,Atari, gathers new mongrel friends as he searches for his bodyguard dog, Spots. It’s an epic journey that affects the future of the Prefecture.

The 2018 Good Dog! International Film Festival is not for profit festival and champions storytellers, writers and filmmakers. This annual festival is held on Sydney Harbour at Balmain (this ear’s dates TBA).

In addition, the Top Dog Film Festival will screen over two hours of entertaining films related to the dogs and their human companions from independent filmmakers from around the globe. Submit films now (for deadline see site) for screening later in the year (TBA).
