The Burger Project, Broadway Shopping Centre, Outside Entry, 1 Bay Street, Broadway NSW

Licensed: Yes.
Value: Fair.
Staff/Ambience: A little sterile.
With Family: Sure (particularly if someone needs a beer).
With Friends: On the way somewhere.
With a Date: It is close to the movies.
Summary: Burgers were fair at best. Clean and friendly.

This place is clean and fresh, almost stark! With heaps of lights hanging over every table, it has the feel of being in a Singaporean mall. Counter service with bleeper pickup, you can add as much American mustard or ketchup as you like. The buns were flat and unimpressive but the cuts were tasty and well cooked.

I do have to give them kudos for their shakes. Cold, frothy and the thick-shake flattens your straw and is chocolate heaven. This place is the diametric opposite of Cafe Ish in Redfern.

The Four Once Burger Company, 38 Mitchell Rd, Alexandria NSW

Licensed: No.
Value: Fair.
Staff/Ambience: Funky and hip.
With Family: Outdoors in the park area is a winner!
With Friends: Sure.
With a Date: Casual second date.

The burgers are pretty good. The old-school-style buns are spiced up with condiments and reminiscent of an American road trip. I can see why they are filling their tables. Personally, not my favourite style of burger as I like a little more freshness and balance. Still, it was hard to fault. The other x-factor is the venue, which opens up to a little corner park, making it the ideal setting for a warm summer night.

Moo Gourmet Burgers, 232 King St, Newtown NSW

Licensed: No.
Value: Fair.
Staff/Ambience: Relaxed and casual lounge-room feel.
With Family: Kids’ options include chips, mini-shake and ice-cream, two thumbs up.
With Friends: Good fun venue.
With a Date: Being on King Street, perfect to stretch the night out with a walk after the burger to your favourite gelato joint.

Apart from a couple of issues on the day, probably my pick of the bunch due to quality and range of options. A true burger joint! On the day of this review, my patty was a little overcooked and dry and the buns are bigger than my personal favourite (too big to pick up and needs deconstructing on the plate). But typically the patties are juicy melt-in-your-mouth, a good size with options to review till the cows come home. The chips are perfectly satisfactory and the milkshakes are delish. Everyone is catered for with eight grass-fed beef burgers (including the Deluxe Moo, more a challenge than a meal), six vegetarian, five chicken as well as duck, kangaroo and lamb options. They even have petit burgers for the slightly peckish.
