Volunteers’ News – October 2024

Happy Birthday to volunteer writer Nina Goc! And guess who is 80? The one and only great SSH supporter, rugby league reporter and humanitarian John Lanzky! Congratulations to you both.

Guess who flew the flag for the Mighty Swans at the AFL grand final in Melbourne? None other than our own Urban Design editor, writer and activist Geoff Turnbull, his daughter Esther and family. Hope you all enjoyed the experience. Congratulations to the Swans for a sensational season.

Blessing of the Animals at South Sydney Uniting Church – Sunday October 6, 10am.
Yes, bring your pets (dogs on leashes please). There will be a collection for WIRES, and Marnie and Lisa from WIRES will be with us! Historically, Blessing of the Animals may have originated in ancient Judaism, but in Christianity it is associated with saints Francis and Clare of Assisi and their love of all animals. World Animal Day is an international day of action for Animal Rights and is celebrated annually on October 4 (Feast of St Francis).

Sydney Metro
Our correspondent Murray Gillett of Waterloo (September issue) has nothing but praise for the new Metro, and it is quick, clean and shiny bright. However, in my own experience from Gadigal station to Sydenham, you will need to be prepared for fairly lengthy walks depending on where you enter and leave the system.

26th Annual Sculpture by the Sea – October 18 to November 4
The Bondi to Tamarama Beach Walk will come alive again this year, with artworks from Australia and around the world – including the beautiful and the eccentric, in this iconic setting. There is lots of information on the website https://sculpturebythesea/bondi/

Congratulations to all the successful candidates in September 14 local government elections, and to their hard-working helpers. I have a nostalgic 40-year event, as on September 24, 1984, my friend Meira Kurfurst and I were elected to Marrickville Council as Aldermen. Marrickville was recovering from some very turbulent times, and this was considered a new start for the area.

SSH Harbour Cruise – October 27
This is our big fundraiser for the year, and we’d love to have you with us on the Tribal Warrior on Sydney Harbour and a magical stop for music, sunset and BBQ on Clark Island. If, like me, you are unable to go, a donation no matter how small will keep us printing next year.

Father Chris Riley AM (1954-2025) grew up on a dairy farm in Echuca, Victoria, before answering a vocation inspired by the 1938 film, Boys’ Town. At 15, he resolved to become a priest to care for young people cast aside by society.

The Battle for Waterloo – a resident’s perspective

I have lived in Matavai since 2010 and am a survivor of a decade of so-called government consultation since Brad Hazzard first announced the Metro and the redevelopment of the Waterloo Estate.

Who would believe that the latest star of YouTube is a charismatic bull named Seamus?

More than pets – portraits of love

I caught the Why We Love Our Pets exhibition on its very last day (April 29), just before the photographs were taken down. And I’m so glad I did.

A ministry concludes

After 18 years with the South Sydney Uniting Church (SSUC), which publishes the South Sydney Herald, March 30 marked the closure of ministry for the Rev. Andrew Collis.
