Now that the Winter Solstice, and the shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere is behind us, let’s hope that the rest of winter isn’t too bitingly cold.
NSW Winter School Holidays, July 7-18
Check with your local council (or art gallery) for activities suitable for children of all ages. There are also Active and Creative Kids vouchers available through the NSW Government for families with eligible school children for sport, recreation, creative or cultural activities (conditions apply). Bastille Festival, July 17-20 – Circular Quay, 10am to 11pm
Although France’s Bastille Day is traditionally held on July 14, Sydney’s annual French Festival, now in its 12th year, coincides with the closest weekend. The festival is free, but you will be tempted by luscious French food and wine, and art and revolution (so the blurb says!). Time to break out your berets and tricolours for a weekend to brighten winter.
NAIDOC WEEK, Sunday, July 6-13
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines & Islanders Day Observance Committee, and NAIDOC Week has its roots in the 1938 Day of Mourning, becoming a week-long event in 1975. This year’s theme is: The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy. Check with your local Council for events in your area.

Farewell Volunteers’ News
This is the last of the Volunteers’ News column after eleven and a half years. As from next month, we are getting a new name, but we still have our magnificent volunteers, and I’m pleased to welcome some new additions to the South Sydney Herald family to broaden our range:
