We’ve all heard of Dry July, but making headlines this year is Plastic-Free July which started in Western Australia and is now in its eighth year. Entangled sea-creatures, masses of plastic washed up on formerly pristine beaches and even McDonald’s planning to remove plastic straws from stores in the UK and Ireland, certainly give one a wake-up call about trying to reduce our reliance on unnecessary use of plastic goods.

With single-use plastic bags disappearing from supermarkets on July 1, it’s time to get serious about shopping bags. Recommended are canvas or cloth bags, but I for one will keep my current re-usable bags until they wear out.

Plastic-free will be a challenge for most of us, but it is recommended to try to remove one bit of plastic at a time. Plenty of tips and ideas can be found at

Volunteers’ Winter Picnic – Sunday July 15 from 12-3pm

On Sunday July 15, the SSH is hosting a winter picnic in the park to thank our volunteers. We hope you can join us (all family welcome) at Charles Kernan Reserve, on the corner of Abercrombie and Shepherd streets, Darlington, from 12-3pm.

The picnic will comprise hot vegetable soup (thanks to James at Tripod), fresh bread and games for all ages. Please bring a keep-cup for the soup (if you have one), and something to sit on. Dogs are welcome in the park (on leads).
