Volunteers’ News – February 2018

This is our first issue for 2018 and we welcome back Marjorie Lewis-Jones as Arts Editor. Also, Miriam Pepper will be our new Environment Editor, and Shale Preston joins Dorothy as Features Co-Editor. After a period of three years with the SSH, Bec Lewis will not serve as Photo Editor this year. She will continue to take photos, though. We thank her for professionalism and for her support as a friend and activist.

Chinese Year of the Dog February 16 to March 4, 2018

Again this year there will be lanterns to enchant at Circular Quay; larger than life and depicting animal signs of the Zodiac. Again curated by Claudia Chan Shaw, the lanterns will be on show from February 16-25.

Mardi Gras is 40! February 16 to March 4, 2018

The Mardi Gras Forty Years of Evolution program will be full of fabulous surprises as well as nostalgia. The full amazing program is here: www.mardigras.org.au.

Fair Day will be on February 18 at Victoria Park, and the Parade extends its extravaganza to Sydney on Saturday March 3. Did I hear a rumour that ever-glamorous Cher will be attending? Congratulations our LGBTIQ community – you have survived.

Always in our February issue I publish the Belvoir Unwaged Program for our theatre-loving volunteers and readers for the coming year. Unwaged performances for 2018 are on Thursdays at 2pm and to claim your ticket visit the Belvoir Box Office from 12 noon on day of the performance. WOULD YOU LIKE A DIFFERENT VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE WITH A FRIENDLY COMMUNITY-ORIENTED GROUP?

The South Sydney Herald (SSH) was established in 2002, with a printed monthly edition of 16,000 (circulation 30,000 readers). We are one of the most enduring community newspapers in Sydney and we are interested in volunteers who would like to exercise their talents as:

  • Writers
  • Distributors
  • Photographers
  • Online/social media workers

I’ve been a volunteer since 2011. Following the untimely death of founder and News Editor, Trevor Davies, I thought I was going to make coffee and do the filing. Instead, I became the Volunteer Co-Coordinator looking after some 50 distribution volunteers, then as the writer of this slightly eccentric column.

Please join us if you would like to expand your horizons or your hidden talents. You won’t regret it! Contact email address below.
