‘The studio’

The studio
rich odor of roses
amidst the trees
scent of lilac,
delicate perfume
Persian saddle bags
smoking
innumerable cigarettes,
honey-sweet
honey-colored blossoms
tremulous branches
burden of a beauty,
flamelike
fantastic shadows
long tussore
silk curtains,
huge window producing
momentary Japanese effect
those jade-faced
painters of Tokyo,
medium of an art
immobile
convey swiftness and motion.

(from The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde)
