On Sunday 18 January, a protest was held at Hyde Park to mark the 10-year anniversary of the death in custody of David Dungay Jr and to draw attention to Aboriginal deaths in custody.
Police prevented the group from marching and later directed the crowd to disperse, with no arrests reported.
The rally took place amid ongoing national concern, with 33 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people recorded as having died in custody during the 2024–25 reporting year, including 12 in NSW, the highest number of Indigenous deaths recorded since national monitoring began.
