Festival of football, celebration of community

Leichhardt Oval played host to hundreds of Aboriginal families and friends from around the state for the 47th annual Koori Knockout.

Among the players were half a dozen current NRL stars: James Roberts, Tyrone Peachey, Chris Sandow, the Fifita brothers and Latrell Mitchell.

At 42 years of age Anthony Mundine made his promised footy comeback for Nanima Common Connection. The champion athlete proved he had lost none of the skills evinced in 134 first grade games (for the Dragons and Broncos) over eight seasons between 1993 and 2000. A return to the NRL in 2018 is a thrilling prospect.

Congratulations to women’s champions the Redfern All Blacks (who defeated the Dunghutti Jindas 12-8 in the final), and men’s champions the Newcastle Yowies (who defeated Griffith Three Ways United 22-8 in the final).
