Christmas comes to you in Sydney’s villages

Christmas concerts and celebrations for you and your family will spread the joy of the festive season across Sydney’s villages this year.

There’s a live nativity on Quarry Green at Ultimo on December 13 with a donkey, sheep and three camels, as well as concerts to come in Pirrama Park, Pyrmont on December 7, and Alexandria Park, Alexandria on December 13.

The live nativity is organised by Mustard Seed Uniting Church Ultimo and will run from 7pm to 8pm. Recalling the events of the first Christmas, local performers will lead carols. Santa will also visit and there’s supper offered after the event in the church.

All donations will go to the Exodus Foundation, which connects Sydney’s poor and homeless people with the professional services they need to break their cycle of poverty.

The Pyrmont and Alexandria concerts are free and offer a night of live entertainment, carols, kids’ activities, tasty food and a visit from Santa. All activities, games and food trucks run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Santa showbags jam-packed with goodies will also be on sale for $5, with all proceeds going to the City’s charity partner, Surf Life Saving NSW. Children’s performers include Justine Clarke, BennyTime, SplashDance, Jimmy Giggle, The Nanna & The Poppas and The Listies.

The Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney, Clover Moore, said, “The City’s village concerts are a fantastic opportunity for the whole community to celebrate and I encourage everyone to come along and get in the Christmas spirit.”

The City is also running its first Green Square Christmas fair at Green Square Plaza, Zetland, on Saturday December 14.

From 6pm to 10pm Green Square will be transformed into a wonderland of Christmas fun. It will also feature 30 market stalls offering unique, locally crafted Christmas treats.

Kids can sing and dance in the Christmas spirit with DJs Peter Baecker and Lorna Clarkson, and visitors can pick from a selection of food trucks and enjoy a drink at the licensed bar.

There will also be fireworks at the end of the night.

Support for ecumenical Indigenous theological education

The University of Divinity’s decision to disestablish the School of Indigenous Studies is deeply disappointing.

Philosophilia at home – Creation and Fall

If, as a species, we are to survive the next century or two, we must take a much longer view of our history than is our habit. But for today, let’s go back only as far as Adam and Eve, our civilisation’s origin story.

Faith communities call for fossil fuel phase-out

Cathedrals and over 150 diverse places of worship across Australia, including in Sydney, unveiled banners on September 17 with a united message for the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition: supporting a rapid transition from coal and gas to clean energy.

Love for new metro

Well, I love the new metro. Waterloo to City in a few minutes. Chatswood, 17 minutes. The trains are spotless, the stations sparkling and the staff smiling. Very impressive.

Philosophilia* at home – ask me anything you like

Here in my secret bohemian palace above the hotspots of Redfern Street, I’ve been watching the world outside my windows – and on my TV screen – change dramatically for 25 years.
