Chippendale cellist chosen as scholarship finalist

Heesoo Kim from Chippendale is one of five finalists to have been selected to compete in the 2022 Sydney Eisteddfod NSW Drs Orchestra Instrumental Scholarship Final on August 3.

The scholarship endeavours to discover and encourage outstanding instrumentalists in the fields of strings (bowed and plucked), woodwind or brass instruments.

Heesoo Kim will compete with Tina Ma (Clarinet), David Carreon (Violin)Anna Chung (Clarinet) and Ava Pudney (Harp) for the total prize pool of $13,000 to assist with further study in Australia or overseas.

Ms Kim said: “What made me pursue a musical career was the adrenaline rush that I got on stage of creating and presenting an art work but also the beautiful process of self-discovery and learning that came with it every day, which made me look forward to getting up in the morning.

“Now it has come to a point that playing the cello has become my identity, as my whole world revolves around it.”

At the final event each finalist will perform a concert program of major works for the opportunity to win the individual first place prize of $8,000. Second place takes $3,000, and each of the finalists, excluding place getters, will receive $500.

The scholarship is sponsored by NSW Doctors Orchestra – Musicus Medicus and the Brian Shearman Memorial Trust Fund established by his family and friends.

To see Australia’s finest emerging instrumentalists compete in the final you can watch it live on stage at the Zenith Theatre, Chatswood, or purchase digital tickets to live stream the event.
