Celebrating positive moments as 2025 ends

As 2025 draws to a close, this December issue is our final for the year. December also marks the conclusion of the UN’s 16 Days of Activism against gendered violence – launched on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November) and ending on International Human Rights Day (10 December). A timely reminder to celebrate initiatives that support and empower all people.

On our front page, we feature two stories that embody these values: the return of Joy, believed to be the world’s first statue of a sex worker, to Darlinghurst after 30 years, and the launch of the Working Women’s Centre NSW, offering free legal support to women facing discrimination or harassment at work. Both stories highlight the power of community, visibility and advocacy in making real change.

As we head into the festive season, the South Sydney Herald team wishes all readers a joyful and safe break. Our print edition pauses in January – we’ll continue posting online and return in February 2026.

Sin, harm and healing

Talk of sin can leave people demoralised rather than healed. In some church settings, sin has sounded like shame, illness, depravity or permanent failure. That can be spiritually damaging. It can make people feel trapped. But we still need a way to speak honestly about harm. Our world is wounded by...

Concerns over Australia’s response to pro-Palestinian activism as laws face scrutiny

From hate speech laws to anti-protest measures later ruled unconstitutional, the NSW government’s rushed legislative response following the Bondi tragedy has prompted severe concerns over its impact on protest rights and free speech.  In April, the New South Wales Court of Appeal (NSWCA) ruled that the anti-protest laws introduced by...

What prison has taught me

Prison is a “culture” that most people look down on because it lies beyond their experience and understanding. As a chaplain in a remand prison with men in maximum, minimum and protection classifications, I have come to understand and appreciate the humanity of those I see and speak with each...
