Bruce hits 350 as Kings claim first win of the season

The Sydney Kings marked a memorable night at Qudos Bank Arena last Saturday, defeating the New Zealand Breakers in front of 10,798 passionate fans and celebrating Shaun Bruce’s 350th NBL appearance. The Kings’ 96–72 victory not only delivered their first win of the season but also honoured one of the club’s true leaders in style.

Kendric Davis was the standout, shaking off a cold start to erupt for 23 points and six assists. His energy ignited the Kings in the third quarter, sparking a 7–0 run that blew the game wide open.

Matthew Dellavedova’s composure and court vision steadied the group, as he and Davis combined for as many assists as the entire Breakers squad.

Inside, big men Tim Soares and Xavier Cooks commanded the paint. Soares led the team with seven rebounds and two blocked shots, while Cooks imposed himself at both ends, helping Sydney limit New Zealand’s scoring options.

The Kings’ defensive intensity shone throughout, applying relentless pressure – even with a 17-point margin and five minutes remaining – a sign of coach Brian Goorjian’s high-tempo, high-effort ethos.

The crowd reached its loudest roar of the night when Bruce nailed a key three-pointer early in the second quarter, the perfect tribute to his milestone game. The veteran guard’s leadership and trademark grit have defined the Kings’ culture over the past five seasons, including back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023.

With the “greatest voice in Australian sport,” Eric Stephens, hyping the home crowd and the bright lights of the Kingdom shining, Sydney’s blend of pace, toughness, and teamwork was on full display.

The win signalled that the Kings’ championship pedigree remains strong, and with Davis heating up and Bruce celebrated, the purple and gold kingdom looks lively once again.
