On Anzac Day, hundreds gathered in Redfern for the 19th annual Coloured Diggers March, honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans and their enduring contribution to Australia’s military history.
This year’s commemoration also carried a strong focus on youth engagement, with organiser Pastor Ray Minniecon noting the growing number of young people attending to learn about the roles their ancestors played in overseas conflicts.
The march took place amid ongoing national conversations about racism faced by First Nations veterans, including booing directed at Pastor Ray Minniecon as he acknowledged country at the cenotaph in Martin Place. “Just to stand strong, stand tall. Know who we are, where we come from, and that this is Aboriginal land,” he said. “Always was and always will be Aboriginal land. We stand on the truth, and truth can’t be shaken. That kind of truth will never be destroyed.”
