The month of May saw plenty of rain, with some cancellations and disappointments. Still, the footy was impressive.
Most importantly, the games give kids the opportunity to learn the skills of rugby league and the disciplines of team sport. “It’s great to see the kids enjoying themselves,” said one long-standing volunteer and supporter. “I’m always impressed to see their positive attitude and commitment.”
“We’ve had such a positive response this year – a strong turnout from kids in all our teams,” said club president Lisa Williams. “A big thanks to all our volunteers who help with coaching, managing, cooking eggs and sausages and serving in the canteen. It’s a real family environment.”
On May 17 the Redfern All Blacks hosted a game at Redfern Oval, which is always special for players and supporters. Teams that played on the day included the Under 5s, Under 15s, Under 17s and the A Grade and A Reserves. Players wore pink socks in support of the NRL’s Women in League round.
Both the A Reserves and A Grade teams won games against the Coogee Dolphins, A Reserves winning 8-4 and A Grade winning 32-24. Former Rabbitohs star Nathan Merritt scored three tries in the game of the day, proving he’d lost none of the speed that saw him retire from the NRL in 2014 as the top try-scorer in Rabbitohs history.
