Mirrung Community Garden has a new option for local residents to recycle their household food scraps. In addition to our worm farms, compost bins and chicken coop, the garden now has a maroon lid food scraps bin that can take all kinds of scraps including citrus, dairy, meats, and small bones.
The bin has been provided by the City of Sydney Council and will be trialled for 12 months.
The trial aims to enable more people in our community to recycle their food scraps ahead of a broader roll out of the household food scraps recycling service.
Anybody can use this bin to recycle their food scraps.
To get involved:
- Start collecting your food scraps in a container with a lid. The container can be lined with a certified compostable bag or newspaper. Compostable bags can be bought from your local supermarket or Bunnings and must have the seedling logo (Australian Standard 4736) shown below.
- Deposit your food scraps in the maroon lid food scraps bin located in the Mirrung Community Garden (South Sydney Uniting Church: 56a Raglan Street, Waterloo).
- Take your container home, wash it out with warm soapy water and start adding more scraps.
Your food scraps will initially be taken to the Veolia Woodlawn Eco Precinct and processed into compost, which is used to condition the soil of farmlands. Around the end of the year, the City of Sydney will begin an insect farming trial with food waste innovator Goterra, who will turn the food scraps into protein-rich animal feed and fertiliser using black solider fly larvae or maggots. Both processes ensure that food scraps are diverted from landfill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a waste-to-resource pathway.
