New works grow and bloom

Sydney artist Danielle Joy Golding draws from expressionist, surrealist and modern realist traditions to create dark and idiosyncratic works, including portraits, landscapes and still lifes.

“I really admire the sci-fi work of H.R. Giger,” Golding says. “The bold biomechanical themes and use of pastels and airbrush, all kinds of media.

“I enjoy portraiture. I like to depict the character of my subjects, and I find the underprivileged more interesting than others. I can describe a person in some detail …

“Sometimes recreating a well-known work of art is a useful exercise.”

Golding exhibited twice at the Orchard Gallery in 2022. The “ethical expressions” shows featured pen-and-ink drawings and explored social and political themes.

An exhibition of landscapes was held last year at the Jews for Jesus gallery at Bondi Junction.

Flowers will feature works in ink, watercolour and acrylic. There are some gorgeous images, larger and smaller works.

“I’ve given a new treatment to the floral theme,” Golding says, “expressing the familiar and beautiful in different ways.”

The artist’s most recent experiments with various media include drawings on cotton t-shirts. “I’ve recreated some art deco works on tie-dyed shirts,” she says.

“What I’m doing has improved, I think, during and post-lockdowns. I’ve fine-tuned my approach to making images, recalling lessons from art school and university, continuing to experiment at home – making use of canvas, wood panels, paper, oils, acrylics and watercolours.

“Creating new work is great. I aim to create newness, as well as work that is relevant to the world around me.”
