‘Shooting Star’

Celestial renegade –
From where? What galaxy, what planet?
Escapee from a passing comet perhaps …
Plummets through earth’s mesosphere
A brilliant streak of light
Before a fiery demise.
Yearning human eyes
Watch for hours, searching the sky.
Fervent vessels of desperation
And burning human hopes,
They watch
For that brief streak of light,
That millisecond in time
When they may make a wish,
That wish which drives their existence
That wish made
As the flaming visitor dies
May yet come true –
Borne, as it is, on the power
Of pure and absolute belief.
