‘My Father Plays Piano’

Tiny cassette deck
All things beautiful and wild
I am 12 years old
By turns inspired, beguiled

Bombast and ballads
The promise of happiness
They say rock and roll
But really it’s business

Sometimes in the room below
My father plays piano

This recitation
Too formal, like a lecture
Turn the cards over
To reveal the full picture

I am 12 years old
The song always glorious
Loud bang at daybreak
It’s primary, religious

Sometimes freely, with gusto
My father plays piano

I dream eucalypts
Their reflections overlaid
Something attractive
Scary monsters unafraid

I am 12 years old
Ready to change and improve
I keep it secret
The name of the one I love

Sometimes worthy, in the flow
My father plays piano
