Jacklin to star in virtual fundraiser

In October singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin released two new songs for Sub Pop Single Club: “to Perth, before the border closes” and “CRY”. In December, as well as playing four shows at the Vanguard in support of women’s refuge Lou’s Place, she will perform as part of the SSH Celebrate Community virtual fundraiser. Among the many prizes up for grabs on the night will be an autographed vinyl copy of the single.

“I’m honoured to be a part of this,” Jacklin said. “As an artist, independent media has been crucial to my success and the success of my peers, giving us platforms to promote and talk about our work. The SSH especially made me feel like a part of the community and gave me a much-needed window into this area when I moved to Redfern at 18 from the Blue Mountains.”

Jacklin’s second album, Crushing, continues to garner critical praise. Online music publication Pitchfork named it one of the best rock albums of 2019. At the recent AIR Awards (Australian Independent Record Labels Association) the album won Best Independent Blues and Roots Album or EP. British newspaper The Independent gave the album a perfect score, reviewer Helen Brown calling it “grunge-rinsed, feminist-flipped, upcycled 50s guitar an’ all”. Jonathan Bernstein of Rolling Stone described it as a “subdued yet arresting LP that blends sweet indie-pop with folk introspection and delicate piano balladry”.

Jacklin will be joined by Julie McCrossin AM, Aunty Norma Ingram, the Green Hand Band’s Tim Gray, soprano Claire Patti-Chehade and singer-composer Mel Quinn – a star-studded line-up – for the SSH Celebrate Community fundraiser.

Trivia prizes have been donated by the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, the Park Café on Chalmers in Redfern, Sydney sister duo Clews, Julia Jacklin, Origami Pop Cards and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Shale Preston will be trivia moderator.

SSH rugby league reporter John Lanzky will be auctioneer (there are seven fabulous items for auction).
