Souths hop to the top

Big congratulations to Souths for reaching the top of the ladder with a hard-fought win over the Raiders in Canberra, 16-12. The team showed they have the heart to go all the way. Tries by Walker Hiroti were brilliant!

Up against the Tigers at ANZ, Souths had seven regular players unavailable. The 32-16 win was truly impressive. An injury to Adam Reynolds was the only concern coming out of the game.

News of James Roberts’ return to Redfern (he debuted for Souths in 2011) is cause for excitement. Things have not been good for “Jimmy the Jet” at Brisbane under coach Anthony Seibold this year. The 26-year-old was dumped to reserve grade, having failed to fire after picking up an Achilles tendon injury in round three.

Coach Wayne Bennett believes Roberts’ Redfern teammates will offer the ex-La Perouse junior the perfect culture to not only flourish but also get his life back in order. Roberts will make his season debut for the Rabbitohs against Newcastle on June 7.

All in all, fans are being treated to finals-quality football. The forwards are leading the way, and with State of Origin this month, I’m confident we have depth in the backs to withstand any pressure.

Speaking of State of Origin, a big cheer for Cody Walker on his first call up for NSW. His story is absolutely remarkable. After just three years in first grade (having debuted in his mid-20s), Walker is continuing to impress, game after game. Opposition teams can’t work him out. He is a naturally gifted and highly disciplined athlete.

At Bankwest for the clash with the Eels (May 30) Souths were without their Origin stars. The team was gallant in defeat, the final score 14-26. Reynolds (having overcome injury), Sam and George Burgess worked tirelessly. Stand-in five-eighth Connor Tracey was a revelation, making his NRL debut and showing a clean pair of heels as well as classy play-making skills. No doubt Bennett was impressed.
