Fan-tastic start for Souths

We have now seen three rounds of the season. Souths are looking good.

In the opening round the Rabbitohs outplayed the Roosters, mainly in the second half. The same pattern was in evidence against the Dragons at Kogarah. An under-strength St George-Illawarra forward pack lost control. The Dragons surrendered a six-point half-time lead and Souths ran away with the victory.

In short, our fitness looks better, our forwards are playing with more vigour, and our backs are playing with flair and freedom.

Cody Walker is a standout. He is always looking for the ball and running off the big forwards. Sam Burgess has been strong and reliable.

As I said last month, Braidon Burns is an asset to the team and the club. Let’s hope he makes a speedy recovery from the ankle injury incurred in the match against the Gold Coast Titans on March 31.

The Rabbitohs toughed it out for an impressive 28-20 win over the Titans. Alex Johnston and Adam Reynolds had great games. With Greg Inglis sidelined with a shoulder injury, there are opportunities for young stars Jacob Gagan or Cory Dennis from the South Sydney Canterbury Cup side, or 20-year-old centre Mawene Hiroti, who made his NRL debut in round 23 last year.

All in all, Wayne Bennett has the team firing on all cylinders and heading in the right direction. With games against the Sea Eagles and Warriors to come, Souths should consolidate a spot at the top of the table. Bring it on!
