Multi-graft trees are great for small gardens where space is limited and several types of fruit are desired.
Autumn time is the best time for planting, so get ready now, prepare the soil.
There are special fertilisers for citrus. Get some of that and add plenty of water, water it in, maybe add a little lime. Seasol concentrate is good. Make sure to add lots of water. Or you can make your own fertiliser – go to the beach and get some seaweed, wash off the salt. Leeches and worms are also great.
Then you’ll want to test the pH level of the soil. This is a measure of the acidity and alkalinity. Levels range from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral, below 7 acidic and above 7 alkaline. You can buy a soil kit, which includes a powder to mix with the soil. It’s not expensive, you can get a kit from Bunnings. Low pH is what you want. Then you will know the soil is ready.
If you get a little bug on the underside of the leaves (it’s usually called white scale), there are ways to treat it. Soapy water is good. Just apply it to the leaves, wipe it on. You can deal with the problem organically by having lady bugs in your garden. They will eat the white scale. Healthy plants will attract the lady bugs. That’s all it takes.
And remember: compost is the secret of a good garden.
Au revoir,
Chris
